People, Places and Things The Round Lake Area Park District has named Linda Wiltberger to the newly created position of assistant director. Ms. Wiltberger has been with the district since 1975. She has a bachelor's degree in public administration from Roosevelt University and is currently completing course work toward her master's degree. Jim Rock has been promoted to superintendent of recreation, filling the position vacated by Ms. Wiltberger. He has a master's degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University and has been employed by the district since 1981. Gene Rathje has joined the district staff as recreation program supervisor. A native of Iowa, he has a bachelor's degree in community recreation from the University of Iowa, and a master's degree in recreation and park administration from Western Illinois University. Rathje was previously employed by the Illinois Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Bettendorf (IA) Park and Recreation Department.
Carol K. O'Neill was named the human resources manager for the Peoria Park District. She will be responsible for all personnel matters, including the formulation of a comprehensive human resource development and evaluation program, pre-service and in-service employee training, skill improvement programs, employee compensation plans and employment enrichment programs.
A native of Washington, IL, Ms. O'Neill holds an M.A. degree in counseling and human development service and a B.S. degree in English and foreign languages from Bradley University.
The Orland Park Recreation and Parks Department has announced the appointment of Cheryl Cater to program supervisor of special recreation. Ms. Cater has held several special and therapeutic recreation positions in health centers in Illinois and Michigan. She has a bachelor of science degree in therapeutic recreation from Michigan State University, and she completed course work toward a master's degree in health administration.
Dorothy Schueler has been hired as secretary. In addition to her regular secretarial duties, Ms. Schueler assists the public with program registration. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois. Joyce Penney has been named public information coordinator. Ms. Penney has more than 15 years of experience as a writer and communications consultant. She is a graduate of Marquette University with a bachelor's degree in advertising. She is working toward a master's degree in media communications.
The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) welcomes two new full-time program specialists to its staff. Lynda Sauer graduated from the University of Illinois in May, and completed her senior internship with Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital in Massachusetts. She has had previous SRA experiences and worked part-time at the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association (NISRA) for five years.
Becky Willett joined the WDSRA staff on June 1. She received a degree in therapeutic recreation from the University of LaCrosse, and gained experience with SRAs during her senior internship at the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). Dr. Patrick B. McGarry, former president of the Carbondale Park District, has joined the faculty of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. McGarry served as a park commissioner from 1983 until his departure in August. He was president for the past two years.
McGarry was an active member of the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD), most recently serving as vice-chair of the Joint Publications Committee.
Illinois parks and Recreation 32 November/December 1987 The Park Ridge Recreation and Park District has recently added two new staff members and promoted a third within the Recreation Division. Cindy A. Walker has assumed the position of community services supervisor. She has a bachelor's degree in recreation and park administration from the University of Missouri and previously worked for the City of Crestwood, MO. Caron "Becky" Crawford is the newly assigned Nature Center/Museum supervisor. Ms. Crawford has a master's degree from Northern Illinois University in outdoor teacher education. She previously worked with the Wilmette Park District and the Lorado Taft Field Campus in Oregon, IL. Wendy L. Gismondi, the former community services supervisor, was promoted to the position of recreation coordinator. Ms. Gismondi has been with the Park Ridge Recreation and Park District for more than five years. She is a graduate of Western Illinois University. Obituaries Bolingbrook Park District Commissioner John Shields died August 30 from cancer. He had been a commissioner there for almost 10 years. In a prepared statement. Board Pres. Jim Conrad said, "John is irreplaceable because of his experience." Conrad credited Shields with bringing to the park board a special view of the community, representing different interests than most of the other board members. Francis H. Pitt, Jr., Roxana, died on October 18 at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO, following a lengthy illness. He was 47. Pitt had served on the boards of the Roxana Community Park District and the Roxana Recreation Commission from 1973 until 1985, serving as president of those boards from 1981 to 1985. He was the fire chief of the Village of Roxana for 13 years and had been a police officer for Roxana and Wood River. Illinois Parks and Recreation 33 November/December 1987 George Fell, executive director of the Rockford-based Natural Land Institute, received the Seth B. Atwood Memorial Park and Conservation Service Award on Arbor Day. The annual award is given to an individual or an organization whose deeds in the field of public conservation deserve recognition. It is given jointly by the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District and the Rockford Park District. Fell has worked personally and through the Natural Land Institute (which he founded in 1958) to acquire and preserve hundreds of acres in Winnebago County and more than 5,000 acres throughout Illinois. Thomas Lovern, director of the Bloomingdale Park District, has won the Outstanding Service to Youth of America Award through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA). Lovern has been very active, not only locally, but also nationally with the promotion of certification of volunteer youth sport coaches. The Bloomingdale Park District became the first park district in the State to make mandatory the certification of coaches through the NYSCA. Lovern is the Illinois Park and Recreation Association's (IRPA's) State coordinator for the NYSCA. He has spoken both on the State and national levels about the advocation of training volunteer youth sports coaches. Events The National Recreation and Park Association's (NRPA's) 1988 Western Revenue Sources Management School will be held February 14-18 at the Aspen Lodge, seven miles south of Estes Park, CO. The School consists of two annual one-week sessions of study and lectures. At the completion of the second-year course, each delegate receives a diploma at the graduation banquet the last evening. The school also offers the very popular Graduates Institute, which runs concurrently with the first and second-year courses. For more information, contact Frank D. (Continued on page 38) Illinois Parks and Recreation 34 November/December 1987 (Continued from page 34) The Waukegan Park District is pleased to announce the hiring of Barbara Daudelin as recreation supervisor for the Waukegan/Foss Park Districts' special recreation program. After graduation Ms. Daudelin was hired by the Developmental Center and worked in its Central Activities Department for two years. Following that position she worked for the Northeastern DuPage Special Recreation Association, where she provided the planning and development of special recreation programs for the villages of Lombard, Carol Stream and Glendale Heights. She remained in that position for three years.
Ms. Daudelin will be responsible for all programs and activities in the Special Recreation Division, including all general operations. Ms. Daudelin received her B.S. in recreation with a therapeutic recreation emphasis from Illinois State University. She completed her professional internship at the Waukegan Developmental Center. The Joliet Park District has recently added two new staff members to the Recreation Department. Toni Swabowski, recreation coordinator, has assumed responsibilities for senior and leisure programming as well as The Hartmanfield Community Center and summer day camp programs.
Ms. Swabowski has a bachelor degree in applied behavioral science from George Williams College, as well as a two-year degree in leisure services from Moraine Valley Community College. Her previous position was superintendent of recreation with the Central
Illinois Parks and Recreation 38 November/December 1987 Stickney Park District. John Brau, athletics coordinator, has assumed responsibilities for the district's athletic programs, such as softball, soccer, basketball and volleyball. His previous position was recreation director for the city of Mt. Pleasant, IA. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a B.S. in recreation education. Carroll Touch Technology received the Building Champaign Parks award at a recent meeting of the Champaign Park District board of commissioners. The award is given several times per year by the district for excellence in volunteer service by corporations/businesses/industries. Carroll Touch was honored for its introduction of and assistance with a computer system at the Special Olympics games in May. The Orland Park Recreation and Parks Department announces the appointment of Jim Pacanowski to the position of athletic supervisor. His duties include organizing sports programs for youths and adults as well as acting as a liaison between the department and various youth-serving civic groups. Pacanowski was the superintendent of recreation at the Hazel Crest Park District. He graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor's degree in recreation and park administration and is currently working toward a master's degree in public administration at Governors State University. The Libertyville Parks and Recreation Department announces the appointment of Trudy Wakeman as a recreation supervisor. She was previously employed by the Arlington Heights Park District as a center supervisor. A 1983 graduate of Western Illinois University, Ms. Wakeman will arrange trips, outings and special events; supervise pools, and oversee various other programs. The department also announces the appointment of Brian Penticoff as a recreation supervisor. He was previously employed with the Northbrook Park District as an administrative assistant. A graduate of Illinois State University, Penticoff will be responsible for all general programming, including youth and adult, and all camp programs. Correction In the last issue of the IPR magazine, the following individuals were inadvertently excluded from the listing of professionals. The following should be duly recognized as professionals who have met the criteria set forth by the Illinois Professional Certification Board: Tom Benefiel, Bernard Clousing, Kathy Daichendt and Ron Lorenzo.
