State Documents

Integrated Farm and Ethanol Production Facility, Department of Energy and Natural Resources, 325 W. Adams St., Springfield 62704 (November 1987), 44 pp.

The goal of the study reported here was to develop methods for using carbon dioxide, waste heat and distillers' grain and solubles without high-cost processing and refining techniques. It was found that cattle fed solubles made better gains than those fed only hay. The data also show that carbon dioxide produced in small ethanol plants can increase greenhouse production and that the waste heat from the ethanol plant can reduce the operating costs.

On-Farm Anaerobic Digester and Fuel Alcohol Plant, Department of Energy and Natural Resources, 325 W. Adams St., Springfield 62704 (December 1987), 30 pp.

The project described in this report involved the use of biogas (produced from anaerobic digestion of livestock wastes) and fuel alcohol from corn as alternative energy sources. An anaerobic digestion system was coupled with a fuel alcohol plant in such a way that waste hot water from the alcohol plant was then used for digester heating and biogas as fuel for the alcohol production.

Inventory of Waste-to-Energy Facilities in Illinois, Department of Energy and Natural Resources, 325 W. Adams St., Springfield 62704 (December 1987), 44 pp.

The 32 facilities listed in this inventory appear in an index by location as well as in five specific categories: municipal solid waste (1), industrial waste (10), hospital waste (15), under construction (1) and those that have been shut down (5).

Assessment of the Ecotoxicological Hazard of Sediments in Waukegan Harbor, Illinois, Hazardous Waste Research and Information Center, 1808 Woodfield Drive, Savoy 61874 (January 1988), 68 pp.

Waukegan Harbor is severely contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), and its contaminated sediments are toxic enough to pose a potential threat to the harbor's ecosystem. PCBs, however, may not be the only source of toxic contamination in the harbor. Two further investigations are looking at how the PCBs enter the environment and whether they biodegrade in the sediments. Results of all three studies will be useful in deciding how to clean up the harbor.
