Other Reports

Invisibly Pregnant: Teenage Mothers and the Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Panel on Public School Policy and Finance, 220 S. State St., Suite 232, Chicago 60604 (December 1988), summary. 29 pp., free; full report, 87 pp., $5.

Statistics indicate that more than one in three black females in Illinois will give birth before they leave their teens, and more than 77 percent of all births to teens are to unwed mothers. This study by the Chicago Panel found that 52.5 percent of parenting teens had dropped out of the Chicago public schools. It also found that two out of five of these dropouts later enrolled in some kind of educational program. A major problem for many of these young women is the lack of in-school programs geared to their special needs. Many more would remain in school if such programs existed.
