State Reports

  • Life and Lore of Illinois Wildflowers,
by William E. Werner Jr., Illinois State Museum, Springfield 62706 (1988), 238 pp.

This attractive volume contains a vast store of unusual information about more than 100 wildflowers found in this state. In addition to charming line drawings and many beautiful color photos, the author provides the folk wisdom and natural history associated with each species. Thus we can learn that smartweeds are members of the buckwheat family, that they can produce photosensitivity in some animals, that they get their name from the peppery taste found in the leaves of some species, and that one variety — the Lady's Thumb — was used to cure heart ailments because a dark purplish spot on the leaf has the shape of a heart.

  • Illinois' Budget and Its Impact on Women, Citizens Council on Women,
    300 W. Monroe, Springfield 62706 (December 1988), 41 pp.

Based on data provided by 10 state agencies, this report shows the expenditure levels and client census data of publicly funded services available to women. The departments of Children and Family Services, Public Aid and Public Health have the largest number of such services. Within each agency the services are listed separately, and data are provided for fiscal years '87, '88 and '89.
