Mayor Verna Clayton to Chair NLC Policy Committee
President, Illinois Municipal League

Verna L. Clayton

Mayor Verna L. Clayton of Buffalo Grove, Ill., has been appointed to chair the Transportation and Communications Policy Committee of the National League of Cities.

Clayton's appointment was announced by NLC President Bob Bolen, mayor of Fort Worth, Texas. The committee is one of NLC's five standing committees that develop policy positions on national issues involving municipal governments.

"We are very happy that Mayor Clayton, who has served on this important committee for several years and also as vice chair, will be able to direct its work in 1990," Bolen said. "This year will see a major effort focusing on the long-awaited report and national policy proposals being prepared for President Bush by Transportation Secretary Skinner. Developing a strong municipal component, to relieve urban congestion and to facilitate the movement of people and goods, will be one of our most important efforts. The committee also will be looking at issues involving airport financing, transportation of hazardous waste, and cable television franchising and regulation."

Each NLC policy committee has a membership of approximately 200 elected officials from cities and towns throughout the nation. The committees will hold their first meeting March 3 during NLC's annual Congressional-City Conference in Washington.

Smaller steering committees of approximately 35 members from each policy committee will hold several more meetings over the course of the year to review major policy issues and develop recommendations for the full committee to act on at the Congress of Cities, when NLC adopts policy for the ensuing year. •
