CONGRATULATIONS TO THE
MUNICIPAL CLERKS OF ILLINOIS —
25TH ANNIVERSARY

By THOMAS G. FITZSIMMONS,
Executive Director

The Illinois Revised Statutes contain several responsibilities that clerks throughout Illinois must perform. Those enumerated obligations are only the first step most clerks undertake to help in the administration of municipal government in Illinois. The clerk is charged with keeping the corporate seal, the appropriate papers, attending all meetings and keeping a journalized record thereof, publish all required ordinances and all other functions as required by statute.

The clerk is an essential part of all that local government represents. It is through the spirit of cooperation shared among local officials that the citizens are able to have a good standard of community pride and value in their municipalities. The clerks, in order to keep themselves informed about their responsibilities, obligations and operations of office formed the Municipal Clerks of Illinois twenty-five years ago.

The Municipal Clerks of Illinois is a statewide organization of 681 members dedicated to promoting professionalism and education for the profession. Each year they sponsor five seminars throughout the state. In addition, they have a five-day Institute and three-day Academy program each year at DeKalb. Currently, this is sponsored through Northern Illinois University. Through this educational program, a municipal clerk can become Registered, Certified and be accepted into the Academy of Advanced Education at the international level.

Municipal Clerks of Illinois offers networking and support to its members, distributes a quarterly newsletter, and offers scholarships to clerks to attend the Institute. Each year the Governor proclaims the second week of May (May 6-12, 1990) as Municipal Clerk's Week in Illinois in recognition of these dedicated public servants and their role in ensuring the smooth operation of municipal government.

The Illinois Municipal League recognizes the valuable service of the Municipal Clerks of Illinois and the many excellent programs they have offered their membership. Congratulations for the past 25 years of service to your membership and best wishes for the future. •
