Water Pollution Control Department
Wins Burke Safety Award

The George W. Burke Safety Award is presented annually to a wastewater treatment facility in the State of Illinois by a member association of the Water Pollution Control Federation.

This year's recipient was the Village of Addison South Wastewater Treatment Facility, presented by the Illinois Water Pollution Control Association.

The criteria for the Award is participation in the Water Pollution Control Federation Safety Survey, which Addison does annually. The facility must also have a reasonable safety record and an active and supportive safety program.

The Water Pollution Control Department began a formal safety program in 1980. It has grown and improved dramatically over the past nine years and has received no fewer than five safety awards from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency as a Department.

A Safety Committee has been established which convenes monthly. Issues such as safety testing, hazards, equipment and procedural changes are discussed. Recommendations are made to Department administrative staff who, in turn, address and rectify the problems.

As a benefit of providing a safe, clean working environment for the staff, the Village saves money by the reduction of lost time injuries and medical claims.

"We are very proud of our accomplishments which led up to this Award, and now it seems our peers know it also," said Gregory Brunst, Addison Water Pollution Control Superintendent. •
