New NLC Video and Handbook Offer Guidance on Disabilities Act

To help local governments throughout the United States carry out the purposes and requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the National League of Cities has prepared a special resource kit including a videotape and handbook describing the key features and steps for assuring local government compliance with the ADA.

"This professionally produced video will enable elected officials and administrators in our cities, counties, towns and villages better understand and carry out their responsibilities under this important legislation," said Donald J. Borut, NLC executive director.

The 13-minute VHS videotape provides an overview of the ADA with emphasis on the sections of particular concern to local governments. Entitled "Partners in Compliance: A Local Officials Guide to the Americans with Disabilities Act," the tape can also serve as an excellent discussion tool for meetings, planning sessions and training seminars — important elements to a community's ADA compliance efforts.

"We think this is a resource that can open people's eyes and stimulate creative and collaborative approaches to making our cities and towns better places for everyone," Borut said.

Albert Eisenberg, a member of the Arlington County, VA, Board of Supervisors and one of several local government officials appearing in the video, described the ADA as "throwing open the doors to 43 million Americans to participate much more fully in all aspects of their community."

Other officials featured in the tape describe approaches and resources that can help in creating practical, cost-effective ways for complying with the ADA.

Individual copies of this ADA kit — which includes a videotape and handbook — can be ordered directly from the National League of Cities for $40 for NLC members and $50 for all others. Inquiries and orders should be directed to the NLC Publications Office, 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20004. Telephone (202) 626-3150. Some state municipal leagues will be offering this NLC-ADA videopackage to their member cities and towns at a discounted rate. Ordering information will be provided by those state leagues directly.
