Snapshot of Illinois counties

This statistical portrait comes from Illinois County Data Book 1993, the fourth annual survey of major demographic, political   and economic information compiled by the General Assembly's Legislative Research Unit.

According to the survey, population rose in 22 Illinois counties between 1980 and 1990 and fell in 80 counties, including 17   that lost between 10 and 20 percent of their residents. In four counties — Alexander, Pulaski, St. Clair and Cook —
African Americans make up more than a quarter of the county population; 55 counties have less than 1 percent black population.

The service sector dominates the state's economy; it is the leading source of jobs in 49 of the state's 102 counties. Wholesale and retail sales lead employment in 20 counties, while manufacturing is the main source of jobs in 14 counties.

In only seven counties — all but Monroe County are located in the Chicago metro area — did per capita income exceed the state average of $20,433 in 1990. In half of Illinois counties, per capita income averaged less than $16,000. Donald Sevener
