Seventh Annual Local Government
Communities & Tourism Conference Sets Off For Scottsdale

Scottsdale, Arizona — A resort city that blends the nostalgic Old West with the cosmopolitan New West —will host Communities & Tourism '94 ... A Conference for Local Governments, June 2-4,1994 at the Radisson Resort Scottsdale.

Sponsored by the Resort and Tourism Network of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), this seventh annual event will bring together top decision makers — elected and appointed officials; economic development directors; planning and finance directors; park and recreation directors; CVB directors; and others — from local governments nationwide.

Communities & Tourism '94 provides a forum for attendees to share experiences, communicate ideas and learn more about those distinctive issues associated with the tourism industry. Special sessions at this year's conference will include, tourism as a spur for commercial and real estate development, community marketing and enhancement, the impact of tourism, reaching consensus on tourism developments, and new funding sources for development.

Robert H. McNulty, President of Partners for Livable Communities, will kick off Communities & Tourism '94 with his Thursday morning keynote address. This nonprofit coalition of 1000 organizations emphasis fostering civic leadership, encouraging quality architectural and urban designs, as well as protecting natural and scenic resources. Before he founded Partners, Mr. McNulty was assistant director of the Art and Architecture Program at the National Endowment for the Arts where he was considered the prime mover of the Endowment's pioneering efforts to promote city livability. He has addressed numerous national, regional and local groups as well as written for several magazines and newspapers. Mr. McNulty has also co-authored three books — Economics of Amenity, Return of the Livable City, and Entrepreneurial American City.

Other featured speakers in this year's program include: Nina Ozlu, vice president for government affairs and development, NALAA, Washington D.C.; Richard Bowers, City Manager, Scottsdale, AZ; Kimberly Messersmith, director, American Express, New York, NY; Ralph McMullen, tourism director, Mammoth Lakes, CA; Leslie Taylor, mayor, Banff, Alberta, Canada; and Dave Reynolds, Iowa Division of Tourism, Des Moines, IA.

In addition, special conference events will include a reception in the city's cultural district, a tour of Scottsdale's historic downtown district, and an opening breakfast with Scottsdale Mavor Herbert Drinkwater. The conference will conclude with a round-up dinner, dancing, and hay-ride at the state's largest western theme park attraction, Rawhide Park.

The registration fee for Communities & Tourism '94 is $335 for one person and $300 for each additional person from the same organization. Individuals who register prior to May 11, 1994 will receive a special early-bird discount. There is also an additional $50 discount for first-time attendees to the conference. The Resort and Tourism Network is an ICMA-sponsored program designed to assist local governments that are actively involved in the tourism industry.
