COOPERATION BETWEEN GOVERNMENTS

By Trustee JOE MURAWSKI, Village of Lake in the Hills
and
FRED GOERING, Assistant Administrator, School District 300

The Village of Lake in the Hills and School District 300 have coordinated their efforts to provide a safer means of access to the District 300 Elementary School on Willow Street within the Village of Lake in the Hills.

Village Trustee Joe Murawski presented the Board with an idea to provide a sidewalk on a dangerous road where the hills make the sight distances less than desirable, therefore putting the children at risk, especially during early AM and afternoon rush hours when the children would walk up and down the edges of the existing pavement going between home and school.

Village Trustee Joe Murawski, through the Village Board's direction, coordinated efforts with School District 300 Assistant Administrator Fred Goering and Wight Consulting Engineers, Inc., 127 South Northwest Highway, Barrington, Illinois 60010 to come up with a plan and cost estimate to provide a sidewalk which would interconnect the school and the newly developed subdivision in the area.

The sidewalk was constructed in a wooded area and required a stream crossing. Wight Consulting Engineers, Inc. was able to design the sidewalk through existing clearings in the wooded area to reduce the amount of tree loss, and also provide the necessary stream crossing design.

Village Trustee Joe Murawski, the Village of Lake in the Hills and Fred Goering of the School District 300 along with Wight Consulting Engineers, Inc. worked out an agreement for financing which was amenable to both parties and was approved by both Boards. The construction started in late Fall, 1993 and is contemplated being completed in Spring, 1994.

Through the cooperative efforts of the Village of Lake in the Hills the children of Lake in the Hills have been given a safer place to walk to school with little impact on the surrounding environment.
