Open letter to all I.P.R.A. and I.A.P.D. members;

There comes a time in everyone's life when you wonder if the decisions you've made are the correct one's when choosing your profession. During my thirteen year tenure within the parks and recreation field, I have experienced several peaks and valley's which I'm sure all of us in this field can relate to.

From the valley's consisting of long hours, weekend and holiday projects and budgetary restrictions, to the rewarding peaks that are received from our deliverance of a worthwhile service and programs to each community we serve. And best of all - the chance to bring a smile to every child's face and maybe highlight a skill or talent they never knew they had.

On November 17,1993,1 began to experience what I felt was the lowest period in my life. This is a "valley" I thought I could never climb out of. I was hospitalized in intensive care having been diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. This is a rare illness that affects the peripheral nerves of the body (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord). It causes weakness and paralysis, as well as abnormal sensations. The cause is unknown and the treatment, if any, is highly individualized. Extensive rehabilitation has been my major form of treatment and recovery may continue for anywhere between 2 months to two or more years. The fear of the unknown has been the most difficult part of dealing with my illness.

During my three week stay in Sherman Hospital, Elgin, and my subsequent twelve week stay at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center, Wheaton, the old adage which states, "behind every cloud, there's a silver lining" became very apparent. The silver lining being the overwhelming amount of thoughts, gestures and support which I received from the members of the park and recreation field.

One of the most important aspects which attracted me to this profession were the people involved and the special relationships you develop. I was extremely overcome and staggered by the outpour of support which arrived in the form of thoughts, phone calls, cards and gifts, personal visits and prayer offerings. Not only was I the personal recipient of this love, friendship and caring, but I'm touched that these intentions were shared and felt by my staff members and other park district colleagues.

In short, I just want to say a heartlfelt thank you for all of the support and encouragement I have received and appreciate all that I still continue to receive. I look forward to a strong and rapid recovery and to be able to express my appreciation personally.

In closing, I want to express special appreciation to the Hanover Park Park District staff and especially to Director Larry Wheeler whose encouragement, support and most of all, understanding, has helped the extensive period of my illness and recovery to become more manageable and a lot easier. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Brian T. Smith
