The DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference recently honored John Perry, Village Administrator of Woodridge, with the organization's 1996 Intergovernmental Cooperation Award. Mr. Perry was presented with the award at the DuPage Mayors and Managers Annual Dinner for his "unique and important contribution to DuPage municipalities through his leadership on the conference's Ad Hoc Planning Committee."

Anita Carlton, Galesburg City Clerk, recently received the Quill Award at the annual conference of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The award is given each year "for significant and exemplary contribution to the municipal clerk's profession." Ms. Carlton has served as city clerk since 1983.

The Illinois Municipal League was saddened to learn of the passing of John N. McCracken, former Mayor of Pana, on April 8. Mr. McCracken served as Pana alderman from 1973 to 1975 and as mayor from 1975 to 1981. He also served as a vice president of the Municipal League.

The Municipal League was also saddened to hear of the death of William H. "Hugo" Stewart, former Mayor of Andalusia. Mr. Stewart also served as village trustee for over 20 years.

Mark your calendar for Local Officials Day at the Illinois State Fair on Saturday, August 10. Planning is well underway for the annual Springfield event to be held on the Director of Agriculture's lawn. Lunch, entertainment and a short program will again be provided.

Illinois' first conference on "Community Networks: Moving Your On-Line," will be held Wednesday, June 26, at the University of Illinois in Urbana. The one-day conference, sponsored by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the University of Illinois and the Cooperative Extension Service will address such issues as:

• Goals and benefits of a community network
• The role of schools and libraries in community networks
• Effective technology for networking a community
• Commercial access providers: friend or foe
• Content and design of communities on-line
• Rural vs urban considerations
• Community networks for economic development
• Various models of community networks
• Challenges and lessons learned
