Researching African-Americans:
A Pathfinder For Exploring African-American Culture and History

Raymond L. Collins

The following pathfinder about African-Americans was produced with several purposes in mind. It is first meant to serve as a resource for those who have an interest in understanding and knowing African-Americans. It is secondly designed to serve as a pathfinder-styled bibliography for libraries and librarians who want to build their reference collections in this significant subject area. This pathfinder also was produced with the teacher, student and researcher in mind to show them what type of reference and research tools exist and to help them "find the path to the knowledge" they are seeking.

While this pathfinder is intended to illustrate the many reference tools that have been published about African-Americans, it makes no claim to being comprehensive. Except the general encyclopedias that are initially cited, only those titles specifically about African-Americans are included, as opposed to any works of a more general nature, such as reference literature of sociology or history. Resources used to research this pathfinder are listed below. Efforts were made to identify the latest edition of each title. Entries under periodicals, newspapers, associations, museums, libraries and Web sites were made on a selective basis, highlighting entries that have a national significance and importance.

Recommendations for other resources to include in this pathfinder are welcome. Contact Raymond Collins at Illinois State Library, Reference Department, 300 South Second Street, Springfield, Illinois, 62701-1796, 217-785-7335, rcollin@library.sos.state.il.us.

A word about pathfinders. Not only does a pathfinder serve as a major resource for libraries to develop as a guide to the resources in its collection, but a pathfinder also has the usefulness of being an effective, instructive an efficient method to handle those common, mainstream questions a library receives again and again. Even more, pathfinders serve as a source for new library staff to consult while learning a library's collection. To paraphrase the old adage about giving a man a fish or teaching a man to fish*: Give a library patron a book, and he will read that book. Give a library patron a pathfinder and he will be able to perform an effective, dynamic search at his own initiative.

*For the reference librarian in every librarian, the correct phrase is: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Respectfully Quoted, A Dictionary of Quotations Requested From The Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress, 1989, cites this quote as a Chinese proverb and cites it from The International Thesaurus of Quotations, edited by Rhoda Thomas Tripp, page 76, number 3 (1970).

Introductory Resources

For a short summary or introductory overview of African-Americans and African-American Culture, consult such standard encyclopedias as Encyclopedia Americana, World Book Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Britannica or Colliers Encyclopedia. Articles in new editions will be under the term of African-Americans, while articles in slightly older editions will be found under the term of Black Americans.

The Encyclopedia of Sociology (Macmillan, 1992) has a short discussion of African-American Studies. A comprehensive encyclopedia recently published on African-Americans is the Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History (Macmillan, 1996).

Subject Headings

Use such major subject headings as African-Americans, Blacks or Afro-Americans when researching a card catalog, bibliography, index or other research source. Consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings (Library of Congress, 4 Volumes, 20th Edition, 1997), to look at the many secondary subject headings such as Social Conditions, History, or Language.
