Clarification
The first sentence in "Benchmark contributions" (October, page 18) should have read: Marvin Leavitt shelled out more than $280,000, most of that his own money, in an unsuccessful bid last spring to win a Cook County circuit court seat. In fact, Leavitt spent more than a quarter of a million dollars of his own money,
