Talking Turkey

Spring turkey harvest sets new record.

Hunters in Illinois set a spring wild turkey hunting harvest record by bagging a preliminary total of 12,850 birds during the recently concluded season. The statewide total compares with the spring turkey harvest of 11,494 in 2000.

Hunters in south zone counties and special hunt areas harvested 4,774 turkeys, an increase of 27.4 percent compared with the 2000 south zone harvest of 3,748. The harvest in the north zone was 8,076, an increase of 4.3 percent compared with the 2000 harvest of 7,746.

During the four spring turkey hunting seasons between April 9 and May 16, first season hunters bagged the most birds with a harvest of 4,152, followed by the fourth season with 3,033, second season with 2,908 and third season with 2,757.

A total of 86 counties were open to turkey hunting this spring, including four new counties with the 2001 addition of DeWitt, Franklin, Macon and Piatt counties.

The top five counties for spring turkey harvest this year were JoDaviess (731), Pike (587), Adams (486), Calhoun (404) and Greene (375).

DNR issued more than 35,750 paid permits and more than 16,200 landowner permits for the 2001 spring turkey season.
