Digging the past, building the future

As architects and museum curators prepared for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library groundbreaking ceremony last month, archaeologists worked feverishly to save what's left of the site's past. In the photo above, Fever River Research employee Albert Brine trowels around the edge of cistern at an early Springfield (1830s) dwelling, where a fascinating collection of porcelain, glass, and red ware were uncovered. Fragments of a rare porcelain plate featuring the likeness of Whig Presidential candidate William Henry Harrison were uncovered on the site, linking the lot to the political party of Honest Abe.
