Society to host Lincoln Colloquium Teacher Workshop

The Illinois State Historical Society, in conjunction with the Annual Lincoln Colloquium, is hosting a grade 6-12 teacher workshop on Friday, October 7, 2005 at Lincoln Home National Historic Site and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. This free workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m.

The Lincoln Colloquium teacher workshop will feature two in-depth presentations. The Indiana Historical Society will provide instruction on its new interactive DVD The Life of Lincoln, which chronicles President Lincoln's life utilizing the extensive collections of the Indiana Historical Society and contemporary footage of many Lincoln sites in Indiana and Illinois. The DVD also includes a downloadable teacher's guide with activities for the classroom. The Colloquium workshop will also include a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, specifically highlighting its acclaimed "Ghosts of the Library" presentation. Teachers will then visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library to discuss the "Ghosts of the Library" and learn more about the resources of the Presidential Library.

Teachers attending the workshop will also be entitled to attend the Twentieth Annual Lincoln Colloquium, Experience Lincoln's America on Saturday, October 8, at the Springfield Center for the Arts, at no cost. This year's colloquium will feature in-depth discussions of historic places and people associated with the intertwined story of Abraham Lincoln and America. The Annual Lincoln Colloquium is presented by Lincoln Home National Historic Site; the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College; The Lincoln Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana; The Chicago Historical Society; and the Indiana Historical Society. Additional assistance is generously provided by the Abraham Lincoln Association, the Sangamon County Historical Society, and Eastern National.

Barton Warren Stone Marker dedicated in Jacksonville

Nineteenth century religious pioneer Barton Warren Stone, a cofounder of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, was honored with an Illinois State Historical Marker on Sunday, May 22, in Jacksonville. Stone, who owned a farm there from 1838-1844 and founded Central Christian Church in 1832, was the editor of the Christian Messenger newspaper, a leading non-secular publication of the day that advocated for the abolition of slavery.

Stone's marker, sponsored by Lincoln Christian College and Seminary and the Illinois State Historical Society, was erected on Stone's original farmstead, now owned by the McKean family of Jacksonville, who donated the property for the marker. Invited guests include Dr. Keith Ray (left), President of Lincoln Christian College, and W. Neville Morris (fourth from right), author of a biography of Barton Stone.
