Society presents annual awards at Starved Rock Lodge

The Illinois State Historical Society presented more than twenty-five specials awards at its annual Awards Luncheon, held April 19, 2006, at Starved Rock Lodge in Utica.

Awards were presented in several categories to recognize the work of Illinois authors and presses, regional museums and historical societies, exhibit designers and interpreters, and genealogists. In addition to the general categories, the Society presented a "Teacher of the Year" award and a "Lifetime Achievement" award to two outstanding Illinois women.

The winner of the Illinois State Historical Society's 2006 Teacher of the Year Award was Betsy Brown, an instructor in Curriculum and Instruction at Southern Illinois University and Academic Talent Program Teacher for grades 4 and 5 at Lewis Elementary School in Carbondale. Brown received the award and a check for $500.

The Society's "Lifetime Achievement" award went to Patricia Miller, Executive Director of the Illinois Heritage Association, a statewide not-for-profit museum services organization headquartered in Champaign. Founded in 1982, the Association, under Miller's direction, has made outstanding contributions to museum management and preservation of collections around the state. Said ISHS Awards Committee Chair Russell Lewis, "I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award than Pat Miller."

Following the "Teacher of the Year" presentation, the Society announced the following awards for 2006:
