LEADERSHIP, VISION, AND VITALITY:
The Centennial Businesses of Illinois

Illinois businesses contribute greatly to the economic and cultural well-being of our state. Job creation, the stimulation of the economy, and support for not-for-profits are all a part of this equation. In recognition of these efforts the Illinois State Historical Society has, for 23 years, honored more than 1,200 corporations across the state. Big businesses, family farms, and single proprietorships alike have been included, ranging from the Chicago White Sox and the AM EREN Corporation to the Hampshire Register newspaper, the Harvard State Bank, and the Piper Brothers Farm in Lawrenceville. All of these businesses have been in continuous operation for a century or more. That, in itself, is a remarkable achievement in our fast-paced, ever-changing society. The stories behind such achievements are important too. This year the Society has teamed up with the Illinois Chamber of Commerce to promote those stories and to share with Illinois citizens the importance of corporate history. Too often corporate histories are overlooked or dismissed as self-serving promotional vehicles. In fact, corporate history is an important part of the story of Illinois.

Our partnership with the Illinois Chamber of Commerce helps to tell that story. The 88-year-old Chamber was formed by Illinois business leaders in 1919 to help "promote and protect the business climate" of our great state. Representing all types and sizes of business, the Illinois Chamber has been the leading voice for business since that time. I urge all Society members to consider becoming members of the Chamber as well.

This year the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and our Society honor 23 Illinois businesses on October 6, 2007, at the Executive Mansion in Springfield. All honorees have achieved 100 years, or more, of continued operation and we heartily congratulate them on their success!

Do you know of an Illinois business that has operated continuously for 100 years or more? If so, consider nominating them for next year's honor. Remember, the history of Illinois business is the business of Illinois history!
