Appointments

Justice Daniel P. Ward, Chicago, a member of the Illinois Supreme Court since 1966, by his colleagues to serve as chief justice, succeeding Robert C. Underwood, Bloomington, January 1, 1976.

Judge John Paul Stevens of the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Chicago, to the U.S. Supreme Court to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Justice William 0. Douglas.

John A. Nordberg, as judge of the Cook County Circuit Court, by the Illinois Supreme Court. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Alvin J. Kvistad, effective January 1, 1976. Nordberg's term will end when the post is filled in the November 1976 general election.

Sam W. Wolf, Granite City, to the 56th district representative seat left vacant when Rep. Horace L. Calvo (D., Granite City) resigned after appointment by the Supreme Court as a circuit judge. Wolf was seated in the House October 10.

Frank J. Matzke, as executive director, Capital Development Board, effective December 1. He was employed by the U.S. General Services Administration.


Resignations

Louis R. Silverman on November 25 as chairman and a member of the Illinois Capital Development Board, the agency responsible for state construction other than road building.

Mark Lincoln Chadwin, director of the Illinois Economic and Fiscal Commission, effective December 31, to take a position in Washington, D.C., with the Urban Institute.


Retirements

William Eovaldi, Benton, judge of the Second Judicial Circuit, effective December 31.

C.F. "Chick" Aiken, superintendent of accounting in the state Department of Finance, on December 18 after 42 years in state service. Aiken went to work for the state in 1933 under Gov. Henry Hornerand served under eight other governors.


Honors

Illinois Transportation Secretary Langhorne Bond was elected 1976 president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

Margaret C. Norton, first director of Illinois state archives, now retired, was honored at a special recognition ceremony by Secretary of State Michael J. Hewlett on November 18,

Arthur Falls, Springfield, was appointed by former Gov. Richard Ogilvie as Illinois campaign director for President Gerald R. Ford. Earlier, William Cellini, secretary of transportation in the Ogilvie administration, was named downstate campaign manager for Ford. Ogilvie heads up the Illinois campaign for Ford.


Other

State Rep. Webber Borchers (R., Decatur) was found guilty of theft and official misconduct by a Sangamon County circuit court jury on November 14. Subsequently Attorney General William Scott ruled Borchers ineligible to hold his seat in the House.
