Convictions


State Rep. Robert Craig (D., Danville) returned to the Illinois House after he was convicted June 25 in U.S. District Court on one count of conspiracy, 11 counts of mail fraud and two counts of bribery. The convictions, linked to a scheme to raise load limits for ready-mix concrete trucks, also involved Sen. Kenneth W. Course (D., Chicago) on the same counts, former Rep. Frank P. North (R., Rockford) on one count of conspiracy, former Sen. Jack Walker, on conspiracy and three mail fraud charges, Rep. Louis F. Capuzi (R., Chicago) on conspiracy and five mail fraud counts, and former state legislative aide Peter V. Pappas on 14 counts of bribery conspiracy, mail fraud and interstate travel in furtherance of bribery.


Acquittals


Rep. John Wall (R., Chicago) was acquitted of all charges in the so-called "cement trial."


Deaths


Elmer J. Hoffman, 76, former state treasurer and congressman, died June 26 in his home in Wheaton. His public service career began when he was elected DuPage County sheriff in 1938. He was DuPage County Republican chairman for 20 years.

Justice Robert C. Underwood of the Illinois Supreme Court, the Award of Merit for Service to the Bar, and Judge Peyton H. Kunce, the Award of Merit for Service to the Public, by the Illinois State Bar Association in June.
