Preface

Access to many OCLC FirstSearch databases continues to be available free to ILLINET libraries in fiscal year 1996. This very important project, underwritten by "Live & Learn" dollars and other state funds, enables library staff and patron access to up-to-date information. This Illinois FirstSearch project is highlighted in an article by Lynn Bierma from the Illinois State Library's OCLC office. The article describes the databases that are available as well as statistical data and the results of a recent ILLINET FirstSearch survey. If you have not already accessed the nine databases available free to Illinois libraries, now is your chance.

Other technology-related articles included in this issue include the Augustana College library project, which makes local history materials available through the Internet to school children, and the Eastern Illinois University pilot project to develop an electronic campus newspaper. And anyone interested in electronic community networks should read Carol Fox's report about the inception of the Sinnissippi Valley Information Network in the Rockford area. Additionally, a detailed report on different types of Internet connectivity is included in Bob Bocher's article, "On Ramps: Options and Issues in Accessing the Internet." One of the issues continuously faced in print journalism is how information becomes outdated quickly. The information in Bob Bocher's article, however, is being updated regularly via a WorldWideWeb document that is referenced in his article.

Articles addressing legal issues facing libraries have been included in Illinois Libraries recently. In this issue, attorneys Scott Uhler and Philippe Weiss explain the enactment and enforcement of rules and policies regarding disruptive patron behavior.
