Deaths


Sen. Sam Romano (D., Chicago), 68, on February 16 of cancer. A veteran of 20 years in the legislature, he was also a senior partner of Rapid Business Services in Chicago.

John Rendleman, 48, president of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, of lung cancer on March 4. At the university since 1951, he was promoted from vice president for business affairs to the presidency by the SIU board of trustees in 1968 when the campus became independent of Carbondale. As executor of the estate of Secretary of State Paul Powell, in 1970 Rendleman disclosed the discovery of some $800,000 in cash in shoeboxes in Powell's Springfield hotel room.

Frederic H. Guild, 83, dean of state legislative research directors, at Carbondale on February 25. Guild served as director of the Kansas Legislative Council (the nation's first) from 1934 to 1963 when he joined the faculty of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale,

Judge Jack A. Alfeld, Carrollton, on March 6. Alfeld was a former assistant state finance director.


Other


Rep. Harold Katz (D., Glencoe) made Ann Landers column (March 10). Katz, who signed himself as chairman of the House judiciary committee, urged that the penalty for possession and use of small amounts of marijuana should be a "modest fine."
