RTA budget is valid
The high court upheld the validity of the $177.7 million Regional Transportation Authority's budget, even though it had been approved after the required June 30 deadline. The decision came on August 26 in the case, Goodman & Shackey v. Regional Transportation Authority, and affirmed the July 13 ruling of Chicago Circuit Court Judge Raymond K. Berg. Berg had attempted to work out a compromise between the conflicting interests of the suburban and Chicago members of the RTA. Circuit Court

Howlett not in conflict
Secretary of State Michael J. Howlett did not have a conflict of interest while he was state auditor and secretary of state and at the same time receiving $15,000 a year from Sun Steel Co. according to the ruling of Chicago Circuit Court Judge Raymond Berg on September 8. (See "Hewlett v. Thompson" on p. 6 for further details.)
