secretary to the late Joseph P. McDonough, 13th Ward alderman. His many offices included: state representative (D., Chicago), 1936-1938; state senator, 1939-1946; Senate minority leader, 1941-1946; state revenue director under the late Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson, 1948-1950; and Cook County clerk, 1950-1955. He received his LL.B. from De Paul University, Chicago, and was admitted to the bar in 1933.

Former Illinois Supreme Court Justice Paul Farthing, 89, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, on December 2. Justice Farthing, who was blinded in a hunting accident at the age of 12, received his J.D. from the University of Illinois, Champaign, in 1913. From 1930 to 1933 he was a St. Clair County judge. Elected to the state Supreme Court, he served from 1933 to 1942 when he returned to private practice.

Maeeo T. Bowie, former president of Kennedy-King Community College, on December 6 at Memorial Hospital in Michigan City, Ind. Bowie first came to Kennedy-King Community College in 1961, serving as faculty member of the English department and as Dean of Instructional Services. He was president of the college from 1969 until his resignation in 1976 to become assistant professor of English at Southwest College, Chicago.


New phone numbers

The Illinois Department of Registration and Education has a new Chicago phone number — 312/341-9818. Residents of the Chicago metropolitan area and the northern half of Illinois should call this number with inquiries or complaints about professionals licensed by the state. Residents of the southern half of the state should continue to use the Springfield office number is 217/ 782-4624.

The state Revenue Department's Wheaton district office was moved in December to 245 W. Roosevelt Road, West Chicago. The office provides information and assistance to taxpayers in DuPage, Will, Kendall, Grundy and Kankakee counties. The new phone number is 312 / 293-1820.
