The Illinois Gross State Product (GSP) in the second quarter of 1977 exceeded $100 billion for the third successive quarter. It is estimated to have reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $107.2 billion--a gain of almost $3.1 billion over the first quarter of 1977. Services, manufacturing, retail and wholesale trade were responsible for most of the increase, while agriculture showed a decline .... It is estimated that only 10 per cent of all day-care homes in the stale are licensed. This means that as many as 67,000 unlicensed homes may be operating in Illinois, according to a spokesman for the Office of Child Development, Department of Children and Family Services. Persons caring for children not related to them are required by state law to be licensed. . . . Railroad crossing deaths declined 30 per cent for a 12-month period ending October 1977 compared with the previous year. There were 69 deaths in the state this year, 99 last year. ... The 1977 Illinois State Fair showed a net profit of $281,000. This compares to the 1976 deficit of $97,000. . . . Enrollments at Illinois community colleges increased by 20,975 students this fall. The total number attending is 345,755, an increase of 6 per cent over last year.... Illinois coal mines produced 5,235,355 tons of coal in September, an increase of nearly 190,000 tons over August... The maximum interest rate in November for loans secured by residential real estate is 9.5 per cent... The preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for October was 5.1 per cent statewide; Chicago, 4.6 per cent; Bloomington-Normal, 3.0 percent; Champaign-Urbana, 3.4 per cent; Davenport-Rock Island-Moline, 4.0 per cent; Decatur, 5.6 percent (a drop from September's final figure of 6.1 per cent); East St. Louis, 6.4 per cent; Peoria.4.5 per cent; Rockford, 6.7 per cent, and Springfield, 4.6 percent. October generally shows an upswing in employment because of seasonal Christmas hiring. There was also an increase in construction activity.
