Long steps down as director of
DASA to be "gang czar";
Cimaglio named acting director

James E. Long, 45, resigned as director of the Department of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse to take a position on the governor's staff as a special assistant coordinating initiatives in several state agencies targeting gangs and gang violence. Barbara A. Cimaglio, 44, of Chicago is DASA's new acting director.

Long joined Gov. Edgar's cabinet in February 1991. Though no charge of misconduct was made, Long resigned because a "perceived potential conflict of interest" might arise over his wife's association with the agency, says a spokesperson for DASA. Long's wife, Renee Popovits, is an attorney with Interventions, a Chicago not-for-profit substance abuse agency funded by DASA.

Cimaglio has been with DASA since July 1988. Prior to being named acting director, she was division administrator for prevention and education.

Long's salary as governor's staff will be the same as his director's salary, $63,071 annually, which is also Cimaglio's salary.
