FROM THE EDITOR

Call me old school, but I still prefer to read off-screen, on the printed page, as I hold a book or magazine like this one in my hands. Yet, throughout the work day and often at home—like millions worldwide—I click away on the computer screen, canvassing the Internet to find useful information, fact-check and shop.

Some sites I visited while working on this technology issue include the Grammar Lady Hotline (http:// www.grammarlady.com/hotline.html) for the final word on "e-style" for terms such as on-line, fire wall, Web site and e-mail. Mary Newton Bruder—a.k.a. the Grammar Lady—responds best to a phone call, however, so if you're in a grammar jam, call 800-279-9708.

I fact-checked a Beatles lyric at http://beatles.about.com for Rich Collis' article "Do You Need a CIO?" on page 17.

I found some "rad" sites for links, lingo and graphics to illustrate the skate park article by Thompson Dyke & Associates on page 35 .

And I came across some excellent resources for on-line marketing and publicizing your Web site. Go to the National Sporting Goods Association's site at http:// www.nsga.org/guests/publications/magazine.html and http://ep.com/faq/webannounce.html.

Now, too, you can access Illinois Parks & Recreation magazine on-line! Thanks to a partnership with Northern Illinois University Libraries, IP&R magazine is one of two publications chosen for the Illinois Periodicals Online (IPO) project. At the IPO site (http:// www.lib.niu.edu/ipo/), you can view entire issues, print an article or search by keywords such as author or subject. To date, issues from 1996 through 2000 are available on-line with the goal of housing the entire backlist through 1970.

Or, click on "Publications" at the IAPD and IPRA Web sites to access Illinois Parks & Recreation On-line. Here you'll also find author guidelines, the editorial calendar, advertising rates, the annual grants and golf inserts, plus rules for the "Give Us Your Best Shot" Photo Contest 2000 (entry deadline October 1).

So, now it's time to move away from your computer screen, go outside, relax in a lounge chair and read these printed pages. In them, you'll learn about the technology that so dramatically is changing our lives at work and at home.
