Cover Page
The artwork for the cover is a nine-layer Photoshop 5.5 file, created by John Berg Jr., owner of the firm B design in Mount Prospect (jpbergjr@cin.net). Berg spent a day photographing skateboarders at skate parks owned by the Deerfield and Hoffman Estates park districts. He scanned the 35mm photos into his iMac, manipulated the images—adding (ahem) helmets, coloring the skaters' clothes, and using blurring filters for the motion effect. Berg designs marketing materials and Web sites for Illinois-based skate park builder Skateparks2Playgrounds, www.skateparks2playgrounds.com. In August, the company launches www.jetboy.com, an interactive site for skaters, run by skaters, that features news, contests, petitions promoting skate parks, music, and a "common ground" for skaters to trade ideas and chat. (See a related skateboarding story on page 35.)
