I think it is a safe bet the average sportsman spends in excess of $100 per year for new equipment.

Hunters purchase shells, new scopes, hunting videos and gun-cleaning equipment. Anglers add a few of the newest lures to their tackle boxes each year, along with a new rod or reel for their fishing arsenal. Add to that the purchase of knives, arrows, GPS systems and dozens of other items sportsmen can't live without, and you begin to realize the impact sportsmen have on the economy.

This month, I have news about how you can save a few dollars on outdoor equipment. All you have to do is to buy a hunting, fishing or combination sportsman's license and subscribe or renew your subscription to OutdoorIllinois magazine. It's as simple as that.

What's the catch? There isn't one.

When you purchase your hunting, fishing or combination sportsman's license this year, you'll notice a subscription coupon attached to one end of the slip. Use it to subscribe or renew your subscription, and you're on your way to saving dollars. Thanks to the generosity of the good folks at Bass Pro Shops, when you subscribe or renew your subscription to OutdoorIllinois, using the coupon, you'll receive a free catalog and a coupon from Bass Pro Shops. The coupon will save you $10 if you place an order of $50 from their catalog. If you place an order of $75, you'll save $15, and if your order is $100 or more you can subtract $20 from your tab. That's like getting the magazine for free and having $10 to spend on outdoor toys.

You can take advantage of this offer even if your subscription has several months or several years to go. Just be sure to check the box marked "Subscription Renewal."

Keep in mind that you're probably going to spend money on your outdoor equipment anyway, but by subscribing you'll receive the money-saving coupon and 12 issues of the magazine telling you when to submit permit applications, where to go and when to go, about special hunts and what's going on in the Illinois outdoors.

There are a couple of things worth noting: The coupon can be applied only to catalog orders, and in order to take advantage of these savings, you'll need to purchase your hunting, fishing or combination sportsmans license across the counter rather than by using the Internet. At this time, this special offer is not available to those of you who purchase your licenses online.

This is a great way to save a few dollars on your outdoor shopping trip while remaining a happy subscriber. So keep the economy healthy by purchasing your license and renewing your subscription to OutdoorIllinois magazine.
