Troup 66

To the editor:

I enjoyed your Route 66 issue and especially Mark Sorensen's History Online that made use of Bobby Troup's lyrics to "Route 66."

As a teenager in the 1950s, I'd see Troup on local TV plugging club dates in San Francisco and I thought he was the model of "button-down hip." Sometime in the Sixties he stopped appearing and recording so I despaired of ever getting one of his records.

He did several studio dates for the Armed Forces Radio Service in the 1960s and there is a CD available from Hindsight Records # HCD-607 containing cuts from those sessions. Songs on the CD that were Troup compositions include: "(Get your kicks on) Route 66,' "Girl Talk," "It Happened Once Before," "Please Belong to Me," "Jack N'Jill," "The Hungry Man," and "Lemon Twist."

Grow old with us

To the editor:

Thanks to the Illinois State Historical Society for the wonderful award we received on October 11, 2002. The award ceremony was very impressive, as is the plaque. Our board of directors is very pleased that we have been honored by your organization.
