To our readers:

Welcome to Illinois Heritage, the popular history magazine of the 103-year-old Illinois State Historical Society. If you are an old friend, thanks for your membership and on-going support. If you are new to Heritage and to the Society, we hope you'll be encouraged to find out more about our programs and the benefits of membership.

Fall at the Illinois State Historical Society finds us preparing for a rich harvest. More than fifty century-old businesses and organizations will join the Society at the Centennial Awards Banquet on October 10, at the Palmer House in Chicago. Invitations are in the mail. We hope you will make your reservations now to welcome this year's centennial crop into the fold. On December 5-6, the Society hosts its 24t" annual Illinois History Symposium at the

Crowne Plaza in Springfield. This year's theme is "Justice and Education in Illinois," but the program also commemorates the 100tn anniversary of human flight with a special plenary session on the "History of Flight Since Kitty Hawk." See pages 26-27 for a full schedule of Symposium activities. We especially hope you enjoy this issue of Heritage, which takes a close look at Illinois' unspoken history as a slave territory and state. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions. Send them to Illinois Heritage, c/o Illinois State Historical Society, 210-1/2 South Sixth Street, Suite 200, Springfield, Illinois 62701, or e-mail me at ishseditor@eosinc.com. Very best wishes for a beautiful, bountiful fall.
