Another October is behind us and the proverbial frost is on the pumpkin. Time to get out the mittens and spice up the cider. While you were watching the leaves change we held our 22nd annual Centennial Awards Banquet in Chicago, celebrating the 100th, 125th, 130th, 150th, and 175th anniversaries of some of Illinois' finest businesses and institutions. In this issue of Illinois Heritage we feature some of the highlights of the night, starting on page 12.

We also take a look at some recent archaeology at the Garfield Farm Museum, a 300-acre historic farm in Kane County; reveal some astonishing historic photographs of the Cherry Mine Disaster and aftermath, which devastated Bureau County in November 1909; and begin a three-year profile of Abraham Lincoln sculpture in Illinois that we hope will help set the stage for the 2009 bicentennial.

In addition to our news, reviews, and other departments, this issue includes the Visions Calendar, featuring historical photographs from your collections and ours that tell a dozen Illinois stories. We hope it gives you much to reflect on as 2006 comes to a close. Thanks for keeping us in your lives and sharing your Heritage — and the Illinois State Historical Society — with others.

Best wishes for the holidays,

William Furry
Executive Director
