On Friday, Feb. 1, Illinois will join the ranks of states that have established an Outdoor Hall of Fame to honor individuals who have made lifelong commitments to natural resource protection and outdoor recreation. A banquet will be held at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace to induct our first five honorees.

They include Frank C. Bellrose, one of the world's foremost authorities on waterfowl and wetlands; Jack Ehresman, who spent 30 years as the outdoor writer for the Peoria Journal-Star; the late James Helfrich, who held a variety of positions, including assistant director, during a 33-year career with the Department of Conservation; the late John Husar, outdoor writer for the Chicago Tribune for 16 years; and Gene Morgan, a Sesser-Valier High School teacher who has spent the better part of his life involving his students in conservation education.

While I could easily fill this entire space trying to list all the accomplishments of these five men, it is far more appropriate that their fellow citizens who care about natural resources attend the banquet being field in their honor.

There they will learn why these five were selected from among 41 worthy nominees submitted by citizens throughout the state.

Sponsored by the Illinois Conservation Foundation, all proceeds from the banquet will go into the Foundation's grants program, which this year has provided nearly $60,000 to fund noteworthy conservation programs and projects around the state.

The banquet will begin with a social hour, open bar, silent auction and raffle at 5:30 p.m. More than 200 items will be included in the silent auction and raffle, including wildlife art, sculptures, camping items, decoys, carvings, camouflaged clothing, rods and reels, shotguns, ICF clothing, gun cases, tents and rod cases.

Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m., followed by the induction and special awards ceremony at 8. From 8:45 to 9:30 p.m., a live auction and special drawing will be held.

The items included in the live auction are themselves worth the price of admission: a Triton 186 bass boat with 150 hp Yamaha outboard and trailer donated by Triton Boats; a Tracker Targa 17 boat with 90 hp Mercury outboard and trailer donated by Bass Pro Shops; a Tracker Grizzly 1648 waterfowl boat with 25 hp Mercury outboard, portable blind and trailer donated by Bass Pro Shops; "The Tradition Continues," a sculpture donated by the Illinois Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation; four Remington Arms shotguns, each specially engraved and marked "One of One;" a tour of Illinois state park lodges that includes overnight lodging, breakfast and dinner for four people at all seven state park lodges; and a two-day southern Illinois goose hunt for four people that includes lodging, breakfasts, dinners, pit fees and guides donated by the Williamson County Tourism Bureau.

Individual tickets for the banquet are $100. Banquet sponsorships range from $200 (two tickets and recognition in the program) to $3,000 (three tables of 10 each, full-page ad in the program, corporate logo on the program cover, unlimited display of company signs and banners throughout the evening, recognition by the master of ceremonies, and 30 invitations to a private "Director's Reception" following the banquet).

Tickets and more information are available by contacting Ron Alien at (217) 785-9371; e-mail rallen@dnr-mail.state.il.us.
