Many of our adult interests can be traced to a spark that was generated in a classroom long ago when we were extremely curious, impressionable and had a child's enthusiasm for learning something new.

Based on this and the fact that stewardship of our natural resources also begins with education, a top priority during my 10 years as director of this department has been education. Today, it is an underlying theme for all DNR programs, including an exciting new program called ENTICE.

The program, officially known as the Environment and Natural Training Institute for Conservation Education, has been endowed with $300,000 from this year's budget to incorporate a long-term, standards-based, natural resource education program into schools and to assist educators in meeting the Illinois State Board of Education's requirements for teacher certificate renewal.

Simply put, we will be working with teachers to provide them with the tools they need to blend natural resource education into the daily curriculum and to strengthen and expand it in the schools. We will be providing free training courses to teachers that not only will enhance classroom teaching methods, but assist teachers in meeting the Illinois State Board of Education requirements for professional certification. This will all be made possible by developing partnerships among environmental education agencies, teachers, administrators and community groups.

Gov. George H. Ryan and the members of the General Assembly should be commended for their foresight in funding this program, which will have such a positive impact upon the youth of Illinois and the conservation of our natural resources.

The new program will be headquartered at Wildlife Prairie Park west of Peoria. This 2,000-acre zoological park was generously donated to the state by Bill Rutherford and the Forest Park Foundation and is ideally suited for use as a teacher training center for ENTICE sessions. It is home to many Illinois native animals such as wolves, bison, black bear, elk, cougar and otter. Here teachers can enjoy the park's spectacular natural settings: the butterfly garden, wildflowers, lakes and restored prairie. They can learn about the biodiversity of Illinois from the state's top natural resource professionals and take home hands-on lessons and free materials that can be applied in various learning settings. DNR will provide free lodging in Wildlife Prairie Park's renovated cabooses, cottages by the lake or the prairie stables.

If you know a school teacher who would like to be on the mailing list for information about the ENTICE program and its future sessions, please contact Illinois ENTICE, Division of Education, 524 S. Second St., Room 530, Springfield, Ill. 62701-1787, phone (217)557-6798 or email: illinoisentice@dnrmail. state.il.us.

Hopefully, today's training will entice tomorrow's conservationists.
