The 18th hole at Orchard Valley Golf Course is a long shot, 413 yards from the back set of tees. The drive must carry over wetlands and keep to the left to stay clear of a lake running the entire length of the green. A good second shot uses a medium iron to hit the ball into a well-protected green. The hole characterizes this 6,745-yard championship course — designed by Ken Kavanaugh and owned by the Fox Valley Park District: it's at once a rigorous sports challenge and a beautifully scenic respite. Golf Digest rates Orchard Valley as one of the 'Top 10 Public Access Places To Play" in the United States. Photograph by Jim McNair, course superintendent for the Fox Valley Park District.
