To our readers:

No rain, no gain. At least that's what the tulips are saying in Springfield. But lately we've seen a lot of new blooms in our historical markers program, which you can read all about in this issue of Illinois Heritage. The Society celebrated "Historical Markers Awareness Week" from February 27-March 4, with a new marker dedication in Leclaire and rededication ceremonies in Homewood, Lexington, and Springfield. More are planned throughout the spring and summer. We hope you'll join us for each dedication.

Spring is the season for our Annual Meeting, held this year at Starved Rock Lodge in Utica the weekend of April 28-29. Tours of LaSalle/Peru, Ottawa, Troy Grove, Cherry, and other sites in the Illinois River Valley are scheduled, and the Annual Awards Luncheon will be held on

Saturday at the lodge. To set the stage for our banquet program, we're reprinting Nehemiah Matson's romantic account of the legend of Starved Rock from his classic book, French and Indians of Mine River, originally published in 1874. Our banquet speaker, Mark Walcynzski, will examine the forensic and archaeological evidence for the legend, and share his and others' expert opinions.

Also in this issue, new contributor David Satter shares his memories of "The Fourm," downtown Chicago's grand-scale cafeteria, which served pie and prosperity to the post WWII generation. It's all good eating...err...reading in your Illinois Heritage. Dig in!
